Restore, not replace - a refreshing approach to carpentry.

Conserve and Preserve is the work and passion of professional carpenter Steve Roper. Steve is a highly skilled craftsman, with four decades of experience behind him and dedicated to the art of restorative woodwork, guided by his steadfast motto: restore, not replace. In a modern world that too often favours discarding and replacing over preservation, Steve champions the more sustainable and environmentally responsible path of restoration. He recognises that by rejuvenating original woodwork, not only is waste reduced, but the unique character and history of each piece—and of the space it inhabits—are retained.

Steve’s expertise spans a wide array of woodwork, from window frames and doors to entire garages, conservatories, and even the most modest sills. His meticulous approach ensures that if it is made of wood, it can almost certainly be repaired and revitalised under his careful hand. He always approaches every job with integrity and virtue, and cares deeply about providing a first class result to restoration he takes on.

Steve likens his restorative process to the precision of dentistry, treating each project with an artisan’s care and pride. He derives immense satisfaction from witnessing the transformation, appreciating how each project evolves from worn and weathered to beautifully renewed. For Steve, the journey of restoration is as rewarding as the end result—a journey that values sustainability, craftsmanship, and the timeless appeal of original woodwork.

  • Steve was quite the find. He went above and beyond what we were expecting.

    Chris – Saltdean

  • Simply delighted with the restoration Steve carried out for us.

    Pamela – Eastbourne

  • Steve saved us having our garage doors replaced.

    Mrs Floes - Seaford

  • Quite remarkable what Steve was able to achieve. Especially as he did all working inside a gazebo in our garden. This would have taken a joinery company many weeks at great expense to complete.

    Mr Davies – Hove

  • Steve is one of a rare breed of craftsmen. We are very grateful we discovered him

Our Ethos

Steve’s expertise lies in his meticulous methodology, ensuring that he not only applies the most effective techniques but also selects the highest quality materials for each project. For instance, rather than relying on thick filler—never exceeding 3mm—Steve carefully splices in durable hardwood pieces and uses flexible resins that ensure lasting integrity and resilience. His commitment to detail extends to both the structural integrity and the aesthetic appeal of each piece, allowing his work to blend seamlessly with the original design.

While based in East Sussex, Steve is often able to accommodate projects in various regions across the country, depending on the scope of the work. His schedule is seasonally adapted: for nine months of the year, he focuses on external restorations, shifting to internal projects such as finishing carpentry and decorating during the winter months.

A strong communicator, Steve values transparency with his clients, providing clear explanations about his process, timelines, and what they can expect at each stage. He takes great care to protect all worked-in areas, both indoors and outdoors, ensuring that floors are covered with sheeting, carpets are shielded with protective coverings, and delicate areas—such as curtains and electronic equipment—are safeguarded with dust covers and drapes.

With a careful balance of technique, quality materials, and clear communication, Steve’s approach guarantees that each restoration honours both the heritage and functionality of the original woodwork.

Interiors and Decorating

In addition to his restorative work, Steve brings his commitment to quality and detail to a range of interior carpentry and decorating projects. His expertise in finishing carpentry includes tasks such as office fit-outs, door hanging, custom shelving, and various other bespoke interior installations. Each project is approached with a meticulous eye, ensuring that every detail aligns with his client’s vision and the functional needs of the space.

Steve’s approach to interior decorating reflects the same dedication to quality that defines his woodwork. With an emphasis on precision and methodical execution, he ensures a flawless finish in every project, whether he’s painting, installing moulding, or perfecting intricate details. His work is grounded in a thorough understanding of materials and techniques, tailored to each specific space and aesthetic.

For Steve, attention to detail is paramount—each line, edge, and surface is carefully crafted and finished to the highest standard. His strong methodology ensures that the result is not only visually seamless but also built to last. This commitment to excellence allows him to transform interiors into polished, cohesive spaces that reflect both craftsmanship and the unique character of each environment.
